Coney Island is one of New York’s treasured neighborhoods. A unique seaside community with a storied past, Coney Island’s honky tonk quality is an abrupt contrast to the sophistication of Manhattan and the hipness of Brooklyn. With ramshackle remnants of amusement parks of days past, barkers trumpeting oddities that even the most gullible knew where false, and the artist community that centered around the Sideshow on the Seashore, Coney Island was, and is, one of the great things about New York.

All this may be changing, as developers have targeted Coney Island, and the City of New York, the developers, and community activists are iin a protracted battle to determine the future of Coney Island.

Photographers participating in the Coney Island Photo Workshop will be asked to develop stories and themes that show the diversity of Coney Island, by focusing on the people of the community, from Brighton Beach to Seagate. Strippers, cab drivers, pizza makers, police, short order cooks, evangelists, and artists…..the goal is to create a picture of the neighborhood, which will conclude with the Mermaid Parade, Coney’s signature event.

On June 14th mentors and students will converge on the Brooklyn neighborhood for teaching sessions and researching projects. There will be daily review sessions and portfolio critiques. The day after the Mermaid Parade, June 20th, the work created will be presented as part of a concluding “Slideshow by the Seashore” party.

After the conclusion of the workshop, this website will be transformed into a showcase of work produced in the project, with each photographer getting a full page and slideshow to present his or her work, that can be in the form of still images, text, or video.

Workshop Fees: $925. (Optional film processing not included)
Portfolio not required.
